DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB.

KING GEORGE TO MONEY MINE FABRIANO AND RAG TAG WIN STEEPLECHASES. CATERPILLAR TAKES THE SPBINT. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") DttNEDIN, Wednesday. The third day of the Dunedin JockeyClub's winter meeting was held in dull, warm weather. There was again a large attendance, and in many respects the meeting proved easily the most successful held at Wingatui for some years. The totalisator handled £23,430 10/ for the day, compared with £22,957 IU/ for the third day last year, making the total for the meeting £80,510. compared with £75,039 10/ last year. Fourteen quality miters were saddled up for the main event, the King George Handicap, for which King Balboa was made favourite, with Gay Sonnet next in demand, but nothing had a chance with Money ilinc when it came to the finish. The Birthday Handicap winner was sent out carrying the colours of his new owner, 3ir. W. Swale, who gave .">OO guineas for him. His success at the first time of asking makes him a cheap horse, particularly as he paid a false price after his excellent showing on the opening day. iloney Mine was lirst out of the barrier, .but was not hustled. He was allowed to make his own pace, and dropped back from third place behind Koyal Saxon and Gay Sonnet to sixth position. When they were straightened for home he then came through his field in dashing style to wear down Royal Saxon, and to go on to win by a neck. Royal Saxon did not pull as hard as usual, and saw out the mile well. Circulation was staying on at the finish, coming from a long way back; while Some Rose ran her best race at the meeting by moving up from a bad last at the home turn to fourth berth. Gay Sonnet stopped as soon as the straight was reached, and King Balboa ran a poor race. The others were never dangerous. Obviously smartened up by her run on Monday, Caterpillar was sent out a warm favourite for the Empire Handicap, and the three-year-old daughter of Paper Money —Tortrix made it a onehorse race. She was scampering away from the field at the finish, where she was four lengths clear of First Raid, who came with a late run. Waving Corn weakened over the last furlorfg, and Arch Arrow was in need of a race. He will do better next time out.. Taboo was again finishing on, and the first time he strikes a soft track he will be difficult to head off. Meadow. Lark, again ran below her best form, while Sudden Storm failed to show hnr brilliance of last year. The King John gelding Magna Charta won the Greenfield Hurdles with i:idicu» lons case. He hit one fence hard, but the knock in no way affected him, .as he drew away from the field . again. TYoilus was anchored by his weight, and Brightling would not jump smartly. Amorist showed an improvement, but nothing had a chance with Magna Gharta, who has pace -. a-plenty,- ■_■ .and. loses no time at obstacles. ..., ... A populnr win was scored by. Mr. Pat Hopan with Fabriano in the Dunedin Steeplechase. Fabriano had one life, but his stamina nnd pace.told wlftm he, Mainspring and Kaikahu landed over the Inst, fence together. Jvaikahu found the distance too far, but his fencing wn.* good. Greenstone! failed badly. wliiln Xylotis raced like an over-boosted 'chaser. The Tnliunn Steeplechase was a fiasco, only Ilirnp startins , . Tevehu bunincd hi* rider off nfter going over n, mile. nrul

Rag Tag romped home the easiest of winners from Wairio, after lying last two furlongs from home. , , Coomassie raced outside her field to score handsomely in the Farewell Handicap, in which Red Racer .and Wayward dead-heated for second Tripaway Tiad every chance at the top of the .straight. .Pound Note was travelling fast at the finish.
