STILL GREATLY NEEDED.
PATRIOTIC SOCIETIES. "MEN CRUMPLING UNDER STRAIN." (By Telegraph.—Press. Association.) DUNEDIN, this clay. That, there, is- as .great a need as ever for the work , of the patriotic societies was stressed by the chairman, Mr. Cla,rk, of the Otago Patriotic Society, at (lie annual meeting to-day. Men, who when discharged were apparently lit, were now crumpling under the strain. Mr. Clark said during its existence the society had expended £174,018. The committee had considered. the advisability of earmarking a certain amount of money for the future, but as each year brought larger claims it dared not refuse the needs "of to-day for those of the future. It had spent a considerable sum on soldiers in the North Island, who seemed to have had an even more difficult time than those in, their home towns in the South. The treasurer reported that the amount in hand was £45,700, which lie estimated would last, at the present rate of expenditure, for 12 years.
