TROTTING.

WHEEL AND TRACK NOTES. (By ORION.) ■ FIXTURES. May 18—Oniaru Trotting Club. May 25—Ashburton K.C. (two events). June 1 ami 3—Canterbury Park T.C. June 1 and 3—Hawke's Bay T.C. June 22 and 24—Auckland Trotting Club. Terence Dillon, in winning the Prince of Wales Handicap from 72yds, showed that he was back to his best form. This is the second race to fall to him this season, and the son of Author Dillon is the sort to win more big money as he is only a six-year-old. The Auckland-owned, but Christ-church-trained, Jean McElwyn is an honest little mare, but she does not have the best of luck. This season she has ; been well tried, having lined up just on 30 times, for two wins, and ten placed performances. She has gone a mile in 2.10. The • Australian mare Vendome, who won the Renown Handicap at Forbury, paid a big dividend. J. J. Kennerley drove her a quiet race, and it was not till approaching the straight that Vciidonio was noticed. She then put in a run showing a fine burst of speed. She is being ticked off to go a good two miles. o 'l With many of the moderate horses trained at Epsom now being spelled matters will be very quiet at headquarters for a few weeks. The tracks are not likely to be often favourable for hoppled work, and the few local horses who will be racing at the winter meeting will only occasionally be seen at the track. Nel de Beau, who scored an impressive win in the Domain Handicap on the opening day at Forbury, is owned by the Auckland sportsman, Mr. Geo. McMillan. She was purchased by Mr. McMillan some time ago and is a five-year-old by Nelson Bingen —Elbe de Beaumont. The latter raced with a fair share of success in the south some years ago. The victory of Silk Thread in the big race at Forbury on Saturday credited the American trainer-driver, E. Plsxico, with his first win in the Dominion. Accounts of the race show that Plaxico drove a good race, and as he is in charge of Mr. J. R. McKcnzie's solid team, he should get ample opportunities to display his skill. It is quite likely J. T. Paul will take Great Parrish south to contest the Sapling Stakes. The half-brother to Great Bingen is bound to improve upon his showings at Te Aroha and Cambridge, but he would require to do it if he is to hold his own with Purser, Ngingo Ngingo and other good juveniles in the south. The New Zealand Trotting Association appointed Mr. H. C. Harley, a member of the Board, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr. J. M. Samson'. C« Ireland's disqualification for life was reviewed, and it was decided to reduce it to five years as from June 24, 1924. Author Jinks has long been recognised as one. of the speediest pacers in commission. The handicapper set the little gelding a stiff task on Saturday when lie asked the son of Author Dillon to concede starts ranging up to 72yds. to useful horses at a mile. Despite his handicap Author Jinks went a great race to finish. third, his time for the eight furlongs being 2.9. He' had gone better previously. Although local trainers scored rather well at the winter meeting at Epsom last year, their experience in preparing horses for the fixture was not a very happy one, and if the present winter is to continue as it has begun, then there are not going to be many opportunities to get in fast work on the tracks. The majority of trainers will be content to give their teams plenty of road and hill work, with hoppled work on the sand track occasionally "__ _
