Heavy rain and a gale of wind handicapped the 240 competitors "who took part in the qualifying rounds of the British open golf championship. Half of the candidates played at Muirfield, and the remainder at Gullane. They will change courses to-morrow. Whiting led at Muirfield with. 74; Compston and Tolley 75; Caven (Scottish amateur), Watroiis (America) 77; Massey, Smith (America) 78; Cotton, Barnes, Macdonald-Smith and Golden (America) 79; C. Whitcombe, Espinosa 80; Havers, Sarazen 81; Farrell (American champion) 82; Vardon 85. On Gullane course the leading scores were:—Jewell 72; R. Whitcombe, Cruickshauk (America) 73; Diegel 74; Aubrey Boomer, Mitchell and Hagen 75; Duncan, Jurado (Argentina) 76; J. Taylor 77; Herd, Turnsea, Melborn (America) 79; Eay 80; Braid 82.
