RECORD CATCH OF TROUT.
EIGHT FISH WEItfH 72LBS, ACHIEVEMENT 01" DR. F. J. RAYNER. To take eight rainbow trout of an average weight of nine 'pounds in one day's fishing is an achievement of which any angler might be proud. Last Saturday. Dr. F. J. Rayner, fishing at Lake Okataina, took 721b of trout. The catch, it is claimed, is a record for any one day's fishing this season. All the fish were in splendid condition; this is accounted for by the excellent feed which the lake affords. Whitebait and kura (a small shell fish) teem in the lake. Until two years ago, Lake Okataina was hardly visited by fishermen, as there were no boats on the lake and no accommodation, Rotorua, twenty miles away, being the nearest settlement of any size - . Now, however, there are launches and rowing-boats, and splendid accommodation is available. On one day there were 108 cars at the lake. ■'" The fish which Dr. Rayner caught, were, he said, full of fight. All were caught within half. a= mile of the accommodation house.: are at present being displayed in. the. window of.Hazard's, Ltd., Queen Street.
