AKARANA YACHT CLUB.
RACE FOR OUTBOARDS, MAUD TROPHY WON BY MISS AKARANA. A COMPETITOR ON FIRE. The Akarana Yacht Club held three races on Saturday for the popular outboard motor racers, the chief prize being a trophy donated by Mr. E. Maud, for the championship in the B class (under 20 cubic inch cylinder capacity.) The races started and finished off the clubhouse, St. George's Bay, the course being about 1| miles. The water was perfect, and fast times were made. Mr. L. Palmer's single step hydroplane, Miss Akarana., won both heats, and led in the final, thus winning the trophy, her score being six points. The final race was abandoned owing to Miss Tamaki catching fire. The following are the results of the first two heats: — First Race.—Started at 3.16 p.m.. Miss Akarana, Rose Marie, Miss Tamaki, and Cliancit got away to a pretty start. Rose Marie led on the way to the Hinemoa, but had trouble with a spark plug and the others all passed her. The finish was: Miss Akarana, 3h 20m 8s; Miss Tamaki, 3h 20m 30s; Chancit, 3h 20m 395: Rose Marie, 3h 21m 10s. Result: Miss Akarana 1. Miss Tamaki 2, Chancit 3. The elapsed times for each boat were: Miss Akarana, 4m Ss; Miss Tamaki, 4m 30s; Chancit. 4m 395: Rose Marie, 5m 10s. .Second Race. —Miss Tamaki did not start in the second heat. The other three started together at 3.33. Miss Akarana led all round, and the finish was: Miss Akarana. 3h 37m 7s: Rose Marie. 3h 37m lis: Chancit, 3h 37m 245. Result: Miss Akarana 1, Rose Marie 2. Chancit 3. The elapspd times were: Miss Akarana. 4m 7s; Rose Marie, 4m lis; Chancit 4m 245. Final Heat.—A general handicap was also run with this heat, open to all comers. The entries and handicaps were: U Devil (S. Ford), scr.; Miss Akarana (L. Palmer), ss: Rose Marie (.T. Brooke). *>5s - Chancit (R. Riley). 455: Miss Tamaki (S Dickson), 655; Dizzy (R. W. Pidgeon), 70s: and Waikikunarau (Miss Brooke), sm' All started at 4h lm except U Devil, which was 2m 50s late. Miss Akarana led and the first round was completed by her at 5h 5m 2s. Rose Marie and Miss Tamaki running level at 5h 5m 20s, Dizzy oh 6m 15s. and Waikikuparau 5h 6m 495. On the second round Miss Tamaki caught fire before rounding the s.s. Hinemoa, and the race was abandoned, all the competitors going to her rescue. The officers for the day were Messrs. W. A. Wilkinson, G. Miller and F. Chivers.
