HOTELKEEPERS FINED.
LIQUOR UNTRUE TO LABEL.
EXPLANATION NOT ACCEPTED.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
PALMERSTON N., this day.
Charged with exposing for sale liquor which was not true to label, S. W. Evans, hotelkeeper, was fined £25 on one charge relating to gin, and £50 on a second charge relating to whisky. Counsel for defendant said the gin contained one per cent more alcohol than it should. The other gin was probably mixed accidentally. The whisky was overproof and some employee probably filled a branded bottle with draught whisky. Mary Stonehouse, on a charge relating to gin not true to label, was fined £25.
Counsel said that some employee probably had taken an unauthorised "nip" and filled the bottle with soda, thus accounting for the acidity in the gin.
