HOCKEY.
SEASON OPENED. WINS FOR SOMERVIIXE, SHORE AND 'VARSITY. GROUNDS IN ROUGH STATE. Blight weather conditions favoured the Auckland Hockey Association in opening the various grade competitions of the twenty-seventh season. The central ground at Remuera—known since the game's inception as the home of hockey —has been lost to the governing association, and save for a few playing areas at that place the matches were decided in various parts of the city and suburbs. The senior grade contests were at Remuera. The grounds were rough, in one instance short of the required size, and the play, even for ;>.n opening day, was of a poor standard. A big improvement must be made in the playing areas if senior hockey is to continue. Breaches of the rules were frequent and the ball bounced and rolled in a disconcerting and dangerous manner. The old rivals, Somerville and Mt. Kden, met, the all whites winning by four goals to nil. North Shore, shorthanded, in a scrambling encounter with Otahuhu, emerged winners by four goals to nil. University, with a lastminute effort, got a victory of three goals to two over Epiphany.
