VESSEL BOUND FOR AUCKLAND
AFTER HOLD FLOODED
A serious fire is reported to liave broken out in the Union Company's steamer Sussex, shortly after she cleared Samarang last Friday for Auckland. The burning vessel returned to Samarang the same day.
Cabled advice received by the Union Company this morning states Hiat the after end of the ship had to be Hooded o extinguish the fire, which broke out »n Ao. 4 hold. This hold contained rice, bonedust and pineapples loaded at Rangoon As eoon as the first is extinguished, the damaged cargo will be discharged at Samarang. The Sussex is a regular trader between New Zealand and the East. On fler present voyage she loaded at Calcutta, Rangoon, Penang, Singapore and Samarang. Her ports of discharge in t Z f x ealand are Auckland, Wellington, ■Lyttelton and Dunedin. When she cleared Samarang on Friday, she expected to reach Auckland about May 15. out she is now delayed indefinitely.
A vessel of 6957 tons gross, the Sussex was built at Newcastle-on-Tyne in 1900 for the Federal Line. She ran for some time m the Eastern service under charter to the Union Company, but is now registered under their ownership.
