CHAIRMAN IN REPLY.
«NO TRACE OF SUCH PAYMENT." LAST BANKING IN 1926. "We cannot do more than show you the books," said the chairman of the Education Board (Mr. A. Burns) when a representative of the "Auckland Star" called upon him this morning. In the presence of the secretary and accountant it was pointed out that whereas the committee, in making its application for a subsidy of £10, set forth that a donation of £10 for high school improvements was received from Mr. S. C. Williams in March, 1028, there was no trace of the amount having been banked.
"The Post Office Savings Bank book reached us only on Thursday last," said the accountant, "and by perusing it you will see that the last general amount paid into the account was on July 28, 1926, two years previous to the "date certified for the receipt of the amount on which application was made for a subsidy. "Tie only subsequent payments into the account were the item of £20 representing the refund of the £10 donation which was stated to have been paid to the credit of the board, together with a £10 subsidy, and a further item of £12 7/6 paid in for tar sold by the committee in June, 1928. The dates of these two payments were January 19, 1929, and April 9, 1929, respectively." "From these documents," said Mr. Burns, "you will see that the onus of producing proof of this item still rests with the old committee. We hope that they will clear the matter up, as it is the desire of the board that there should be an amicable adjustment."
