LOCAL BODIES.

DEVONPORT BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Devouport Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. E. Aldridge, presiding. Councillors present greeted the Mayor with three cheers on being returned unopposed for the Mayoralty of the borough. Befnse Destructor.--The Mayor reported the meeting of the joint controlling committee, at which had been considered a proposition to reduce the running costs by concentrating the burning of rubbish on three days of the week. This would reduce the smoke nuisance and econoise on the fuel. It was agreed that the foreman of works be given authority to rearrange refuse collection lays to agree with the general scheme. Poppy Day and Anzae Day.— lhe Mayor reported that arrangements for a street collection on Friday. April 1!>, had Ween made by the Mayoress, and it was hoped that there would be a generous response throughout the borough. Arrangements were also complete for a memorial service on Anzae Day in the Parish Hall. It was decided to purchase a wreath, to be laid on the local memorial statue on the morning of Anzae Day. when a children s rally will be held at 10 a.m.

Summer Street.—Complaint was received of the State of Summer Street.

"There are gaping furrows twelve inches deep." declared the aggrieved resident, "which effectively prevent pedestrians from crossing the road.'' The engineer was authorised to put the tractor on the street ami level out the obstacles to progress.

Football Grounds.— Mr. Ellisdon reported the allocation of football wounds for the season. The sub-committee had mot representatives of the three codes, and had arranged a rotating sequence ol usajre. The committee's report was adopted.

The Napier Library.—Bequest was received from the executors in the estate <>f the late Mr. W. J. Napier that the council should arrange for the housing ot the library presented to the borough bv the executrix. The matter was left with the Mayor to arrange.

Quarrying on Rangitoto.— Messrs. Rope and Thomson, contractors, represented by Messrs. Leahy and Tidily, appeared befoie the council with regard to a quarrying lease, alleged to have been purchased by them from Messrs. Trayes Bros. The Rangitnto Domain Board had informed them that the lease had expired, and quarrying must cease. The deputation asked that they be allowed to fulfil a certain contract for which they had tendered on the basis of lease possession. This was agreed to on retrosj>eetive royalty terms.

Dinghy Shelters on Queen's Parade.— It was decided to order the removal of dinghy shelters on Queen's Parade, and to call a conference with regard to the erection of more permanent structures.

King Edward's Parade.—lt was decided to prohibit the pulling up of boats on the foreshore between the rowing club shed and North head, and further to request the occupiers of boat sheds on the beach near the corner of King Edward Parade and ( heltenham Road to remove private property therefrom. The grassing of the promontory past Duder's Beach was authorised.

Treasurer's Annual Report—The borough treasurer reported that his annual statement was complete, and was now in the auditor's hands. It showed total rate receipts, exclusive of loan money, to be £5rt.265. There was a book debit balance of £,027. but there were cash credits due to the general account of .t,4!>o/ 13 3. In addition to work actually estimated for over £1800 woith of tarring and sanding had been done, and this expendituie almost- equalised the balancesheet. Commenting on the report, the .Mayor stressed tile urgency of the proposed loan „f £43lN> as necessary to finance the present year without extreme difficulty. The report was adopted.

For-son-Stewart. Hart anil Row ntree were appointed to attend the Town Planning Conference.

The Auckland Museum and Institute Council notified the board that the levy for the year was £26 9 10

It was reported that the board's property at the Falls Park had been damaged bv persons unknown, and it was decided t.hat the attention of the local constable be drawn to this matter. A large number of application* for \ aluation of lands considered unsuitable for sub-division \v<re received and it was afrreed that these should be dealt with at a special meeting. Lonsiderabie discussion took place over the question of allowing pijM to be kept within the town area, and it was agreed that a by-law dealing with this subject fihiould be framed bafore any further permits were issued.

MOUNT WELLINGTON ROAD BOARD

The Mount Wellington Road Board met last night, Mr. G. H. Kay, the chairman, presiding.

With regard to a letter from the Railway* Department asking whether any proposal had been mooted for the reclamation of the tidal swamp on the Inner side of the railway embankment at Westfield the board decided that the area was not in their jurisdiction, and that the matter lay between the Raihvav Department and the Auckland Harbour Board It was decided that the board should be represented at the town-planning conference.

An amount of two guineas was donated to the Auckland Returned Soldiera' Association. t Building permit* to the value of £30..->4l were reported to have been issued to year ending March 31.
