WHERE "FLU" COMES FROM.

VICIOUS FEMALE INSECTS.

CAUSE OF EPIDEMIC INCREASE.

The man who, last year, predicted for 1929 a severe influenza plague, described the grounds upon which he made his forecast.

He is Mr. A. Moore Hogarth, founder and chairman of the College of Pestologv, who, at a complimentary luncheon" presided over by Sir William Bull, M.P., was presented with his portrait in oils.

Mr. Hogarth said his conclusions last vear were based on a theory that foot-and-mouth disease, distemper and human influenza were caused by a kindred germ which was spread by some form of insect carrier.

"I noticed," he added, "that in the various types of insects there was a vast predominance of females, and, knowing the female insect to be vicious, more biting, and, in fact, a small living dynamo. X came to the conclusion that llie dissemination of germs would be l iore thorough than for some considerable time."

The fly. for instance, as a germ-carrier, was capable nf more mischief than a mad r-lephant.
