LAND-LOVING FIREMAN.
STOLE WATCH FROM SHIP. Described by the police a« a fireman who will not go to sea. William Turner (31) appeared at the Poliee Court this morning, charged with stealing a watch valued at £2, belonging to George Adams. He pleaded guilty. Sub-Inspector McCarthy said the theft was a contemptible one. Adams was a member of the crew of the collier Canopus. and while he was in the ship's galley Turner went into the sleeping quarters of the crew and stole Adams' watch. The watch had boon recovered. Turner had no right on the ship at all. "Why don't you go to sea ?" asked Mr. Hunt. "I can't get a job." replied Turner. "I've even walked to Whangarei looking for work." Asked why he stole the watch Turner said. "I've been hitting the booze lately." Mr. Hunt decided to give Turner the option of paying a fine of £2, or going to gaol for 14 days.
