SENTENCE STANDS.
Flogging For Farmer Who Caused Native's Death.
SOUTH AFRICAN CASE.
(Australian and X.Z. I'rcss Association.)
(Rcceivwl 0.-J0 a.m.)
CAPETOWN, April 10,
The decision of the Cabinet not to recommend the Governor to exercise his Royal prerogative in the case of the farmer sentenced to lashes and imprisonment as the result of the death of a native, is hailed as the vindication of justice. Probably one result will be the establishment of a Court of Criminal Appeal.
The Dutch newspaper "Pretoria," alone condemns the Cabinet decision on the grounds that corporal punishment was abolished in all civilised countries. The judge disregarded the recommendation for mercy, which, he said, was influenced by sentimental considerations.
