Of City.
UNFORGETTABLE SIGHTS
(Received 10.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. There were lively scenes in the city lkst evening at a large fire in the Chinese quarter in Campbell Street, near two theatres. It occurred while a procession of timber workers, 2000 strong, was passing. There was heavy traffic congestion, and carnival visitors, who were thick ill the streets, witnessed unforgettable sights. The fire started on the top floor of Belmore Chambers, six storeys high, and spread to the lower floors, which were practically gutted or ruined by water. Explosive materials caused loud, detonations, and illuminated the sky. Motor accessories on the lower floors were set alight, and the premises of manufacturers and printers on the top floors. The damage done is estimated at £25,000. While the fire was raging William Bratt, when attempting to prevent a man from striking his wife, was stabbed in the arm by the former.
