ACID IN RIVER WATER.
MAORIS MITCH ALARMED. FOOD SUPPLY THREATENED. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, this day. It is reported that since pumping operations began at the Hikurangi mine. the water in the AVairua River has become greenish in colour, and that apparently it is impregnated with free sulphuric acid. Dead eels and trout are found in large numbers, the tools used by drainage workers have been affected, and the water in river where it passes through the Jordan district is said to burn the sk'i , . nff tlie hands. The Maoris are much concerned lest their food supply from the river be cut off, and farmers are keeping their stock away from the river.
