GRANT APPROVED.
NEWTON POST OFFICE. ADDITIONS TO COST £3500. STREET TELEPHONE FOR CITY. Cabinet has approved a grant of £3500 for additions to the Newton Post Office. Telegraphic advice received this morning by Mr. W. E. Parry, M.P. for Auckland Central, from the Postmaster(ieneral. Mr. J. B. Donald, stated that the improvements would be made without delay. Several years have passed since the business men of the district asked the Prime Minister to consider additions to :he accommodation for the general public and the postal staff. The position ha> become steadily more acute, and the ncreasing urjrenoy of the work ha* been 'nought annually before Parliament. File latest representations were to the Postmaster-*Jenwal. who has announced the granting of a -uttieient sum to carry, out tht» proposed alterations.
"The business at Xevvton Post Oflice is growing rapidly, and its annual increase lias been so marked that on some days there has scarcely been standing room for the public." said Mr. Parry. He added that th? grant would be most acceptable and would be particularly appreciated by the business people in the locality. Another improvement granted by Cabinet is a telephone cabinet to be ■'l-pcted at the corner of Customs Street West and Queen Street. A request for \ slot telephone on the corner was made to the Postmaster-General last month by » number of city business people, and Mie inconvenience and risk of having to ■-•ross the busy intersection every time a telephone call had to be made were submitted a= strong arguments in favour of i small grant.
