Payment of Officers. Concerning salaries of staff, the following official statement has been authorised: — "A Commissioner gets between £7 and £8 a week, and the use of a furnished house, which is an allowance made to «vnry officer. A lieut.-commissioner about £L a week less. A colonel f/ets £4 a week, plus a war bonus, bringing it usj to slightly under £5 a week. Th/:n come a lieiit.-colonel, brigadier, major and staff captain, proportionately graded. In the field rank the order is field major, adjutant, ensign captain, and lieutenant. A field captain gets £1 8/ a week, including 7/6 war bonus, and furnished quarters like tbe rest; and a field lieutenant gets £1 4/6 a week, including 7/ war bonus. In other countries the rates of pay approximate to these, having regard to the differences in the scale of living. "It is now recognised throughout the world that the officers of the Army, from top to bottom, work on a self-denying basis, and none receive more than what might be called a living wage. I should deprecate very much any movement to raise the salaries of the officers from tho present self-denying basis." •
