CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB. BEAU GESTE DEFEATS RAPIER GOBLIN MARKET FALLS TO PINK COAT. FAVOURITES PLACED IN SEVEN EVENTS. (Ti.v Telegraph.— Speeial to "Star.") CTiKISTCIirRCn. Saturday. The Cuiiicrbtiry Jockey Club's summer ii ling was held to-day in fine weather. The track was hard and fast. The attendance was tip to (lie average, and the tnialisator investments were £20,495, against £20,04."> last year. Evening was first to break the line in trie Hornby Hamlkap, with Aberfeldy ami Happy Queen in close attendance. E\ ening ami Aberfeldy were still showing clear of Happy Quen at the end of three furlongs, where Killaddie, Ripdale an<l Zeuxits were at tJie head of the others. There wa<s not much change racing round the home turn, but on reaching the straight Aberfeldy and. Happy Queen retired. Toawai then moved up, but Evening Tield her place in front, and beat Toawai by a neck. Ripdale was three-quart ere of a length away, with Waterlow three lengths back.
Chide's Gallant Effort. Chide was chopped out at the start of (.ho Trial Stakes, Arch Arrow and Solgele going on three lengths in front of Sea Raid, while Chide eoon dropped back to last. At the end of three furlongs Solgele was showing the way to Sea Raid and Arch Arrow, while Chide had started to move up. Racing round the iiome turn Solgele and Sea Raid had (.'hide and The Viscount as their nearest attendants. Chide took the lead a furlong from the post and won easily by three lengths from The. Viscount, who beat Solgele by a similar distance, with Sea Raid half a-length further back. Middle Park Plate. Coblin Market, starting from the outnide, began very smartly in the Middle Park Plate, and when the ourse proper was reached was in front, on the rail, with Pink Coat handy, while Rigmarole and Bon Rose were at the head of the others. Coblin Market and Pink Coat were together a furlong from the post, but Pink Coat wore his rival down and won decisively by a neck. Rigmarole was three lengths away, with Bon Rose two lengths further back. Rapier Defeated. Beau Geste was first to show out in the Midsummer Handicap, followed by Count Cavour, Prid* and Prickles. At the end of a furlong Pride and Prickles were in the lead, and two lengths further on the pair were together in the lead, with Battle Colours, Rapier, Count Cavour and Beau Geste last. Battle Colours moved up to Prid© and Prickles at the home turn, and these three led into the straight, where Rapier — on the rails —and Beau Geste—on the outside— were handy. Rapier and Beau Geste were in charge a furlong from the post, a great finish ending in favour of Beau Geste by a nose. Pride was three lengths away, just in front of Prickles. The Youngsters.
Courtlike and Juniper were showing clear in the Lyttelton Plate when the coarse proper was reached, with Straight Course, Arrow Shield and Desert Song also prominent. The leading pair were never troubled, Juniper beating Courtlike by a head. Straight Course was two lengths away, with Desert Song close up fourth, followed by Jaleux and Belcaire. Craven Plate. Meadow Lark and Arrowmir led for about a furlong in the Craven Plate, when Arrowmir opened out the gap to two lengths from Meadow Lark, with Gold Brick, Silver Coot and First Raid next. Arrowmir was just clear of Meadow Lark at the entrance to the straight, with Gold Brick still heading the others. In a good finish Arrowmir lasted long enough to beat Meadow Lark by a head, Silver Coot finishing fast, was three-quarters of a length away, a neck in front of First Raid. Nearly A Surprise. Great Star and Arch Arrow (tenth in order of betting) were first to become prominent in the Halswell Handicap, while Paper Boy and Starshooter followed them on to the course proper. These four had the race to themselves, Great Sta beating Arch Arrow by half-a-length. Paper Boy, who finisher strongly over the last furlong, was three-quarter* of a length away, with Starshooter a length and a-half further back. Final Favourite Fails. Full Feather, ridden by R. S. Bagby, was favourite in a good betting race, for the Post Handicap. He went down very scratchily in his preliminary, and in the race never looked like a winner. Pangolin made the pace to the straight, where Nincompoop retired. Buoyant was in front at the distance, and stalled off Amor's challenge by a neck. Paquito came with a late run to get third, less than a length away, and Pangolin close up. Paquito was unlucky to be beaten. He was a long way back at the entrance to the straight, and even then might have won but for meeting trouble. Amor gave further evidence of being an improved horse. Detailed results: —
