THROUGH THE FENCE.
STANDING MOTOR CAR HIT.
ACCIDENT IN BEACH ROAD,
driver in hospital.
An unusual accident happened on Beach Road shortly before 11.30 o'clock this morning, when a motor lorry, it is said, struck a stationary car and forced it through the fencc skirting the railway yards on to the railway lines. The driver of the car, Mr. George Painton, of 18, Paris Road, Edendale, who was mending a puncture at the time, was, it is stated, carried on to the rails by the impact, and suffered injuries, to a leg and a wrist. He was' removed to the public hospital by the St. John Ambulance, where it was learned that his injuries were not serious. The injured man is a motor driver, aged 2(>. _ The driver of the lorry, Mr. W. Martin, who was proceeding in the direction of Parnell, states that he noticed the car at the side of the road, and swung his lorry out to avoid it. It skidded, however, and turned in the opposite direction. He applied his brakes sharply, but the lorry skidded along the tar macadam surface, collided with the car and pushed it through the railway yard fence.
Several yards of the fence were torn away, and the. rear wheels of the car were damaged beyond repair. Otherwise little damage resulted. The lorry bore little evidence of the crash.
