BIG GARRATT ENGINE.
A WONDERFUL CLIMB. (By Telegraph,—Press Association.) WELLINGTON 7 , Friday. The Garratt engine was tested to-day with a load of .'JI2 tons. The trip was up the hill to Jolmsonville, one of the steepest grades in the North Island. The first trip was made at 10.45 a.m., but there was a trifling error in the adjustment of the sanding apparatus, and the engine was stopped after negotiating the 1 in 35 grade with ease. Another start was made about noon with the sand apparatus adjusted, and on this occasion the big Garratt made a wonderful climb. The engine, beating regularly and powerfully with something in hand, made the trip from the yard, and with the disadvantage of starting on a curve, to the top of the hill at Jolmsonville station, in 11 minutes. The powerful AB Pacific type cf engine, hitherto the most powerful used, takes 14 minutes over this run with its maximum load of 190 tons, so that the Garratt shows a 25 per cent increase in speed and more in load haulage.
