SOCIAL GATHERINGS.
A most enjoyable afternoon was spent on the Remuera croquet lawns on Thursday, when a. farewell party was given to Mesdames Penn and Wooller. who are shortly leaving for a trip abroad. During the afternoon the president of the club. Mrs. W. Bruce, in a very liapjiv speech, wished them bon vovage and made them each a presentation on behalf of their fellow members.
A social afternoon was given for the members of the Takapuna Croquet Clui) on Ihursdav afternoon. Progressive croquet (for which prizes were given bv Mrs. C. Briusden and Mr. .1. W. Harden), was played, the winning cards being handed in bv Mrs. .(. Winter (A) and Mrs. W. Elliott (B). Mrs. A. While, a member of the club, was most successful in the open tournaments played at Rotorua and at Hamilton. At Rotorua she was one of the winning ladies in the ladies' doubles and at Hamilton >he secured a first in the singles. The rlim has arranged a large "At Home" sometime earlv in March.
A most enjoyable afternoon was spent on the Poiisonbv Croi|iiet Club's lawn? 011 Thursday, when Miss Brown, president of the club, entertained the members and friends. A most delightful afternoon tea was provided by the president. The table decorations were very pretty, lavender asters and African marigolds (club colours) predominating. Progressive croquet was played and mum enjoyed by all. The prizes were won as follows:—A grade, Mesdames FraserSmitli. Hilton and Torrance: B grade, Mesdames Horsier and James. Mrs. Hilton, on behalf of the member?, thanked Miss Brown for her hospitality.
The fortnightly meeting of the Auckland Women's Branch of the New Zealand Labour Party was held on Thursday in the branch's room, Tabernacle Buildings, Mrs. Soljak presiding. In connection with the conference of Labour women to be held at Wellington during the last week in March, Mesdames Soljak and Cassie were appointed delegates, the former also to represent the branch at the General Labour Conference at Easter. It was decided to ask the L.R.C. to run a full ticket for the municipal bodies at the coming elections. Candidates, including several women, were nominated by the branch. The question of free school books and the present position in regard to the question generally was again discussed, the Minister's reply to the resolution previously carried being strictly non-committal. In connection with the proposed poison gas chamber, it was decided that if sufficient outside assistance be forthcoming members acting individually will organise an openair meeting to protest against the proposal.
A very enjoyable evening, taking the form of a kitchen evening, was spent .it •the home of Miss Pat Vercoe, Pa ice Avenue, in honour of the approaching marriage of Miss Belle McCarthy, Songs were rendered by the Misses Matthews. The annual welcome to freshers was held bv the second year pupils ot tne Auckland Training College for Teachers, at the Scots Hall last evening. Ihe function was delightfully informal, and a very cheery evening was spent b\ all present. Dancinsr was enjoyed to excellent music, and during the evening songs were suns by Miss Cameron.
