ANOTHER SURPRISE IN SPRINT

(By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") WANGANUI, Saturday. The autumn meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club was continued to-day in dull but tine weather. The attendance was better than on Thursday. The fiords were not large, but the racing was very interesting.

In the Harrison Handicap Avro anil Hipo fell, and both riders—R. Marsh and T. Metcalf —were conveyed to hospital. The extent of their injuries is unknown. An inquiry was held, the decision being that the mishap was purely accidental The hurdle race was run at a great pace and it was a wonderful finish, the mile and three-quarters being cut out in 3.11 1-5. Vivo was responsible for the pace but she had to be content with third place. The totalisator handled £25,.">,">7 10/, compared with £29,327 on the second day last year, making a total for the meeting of £54,369 10/, against £.32,403, an increase of £19<>G. High Falutin' Wins Well. War Flame and Monoio were taken out of the Autumn Handicap, leaving seven to face the starter. High Falutin' (£1100), was the popular pick, Eoi De Val and Green Acre, being the most fancied of the others. Volplane was first to show out from Green Acre, Vinella and Monsogne. As they went down the back, Volplane had Vinella as his nearest attendant, with Green Acrei, Monsogne and Vaucluse next in order. Crossing the top they were still in the same order, but Vinella was grst into the straight, followed by Volplane, Green Acre and High Falutin'. Once in line for home, High Falutin' challenged, and taking command, won by a length and a-quarter from Green Acre, with Monsogne two lengths ■ further back, third,;' Vinella was fourth, and Vol'plan*Hnext. Star Area a Double. The five acceptors paraded for the Earle Stakes, Lavishing Prince ( £1135), and Rapine ( £1000), being most fancied. As they crossed the top, Laughing Prince was in third place, Mendip still being in command. Mendip had three lengths' lead entering the straight, from Star Area, with Laughing Prince closing up. A hundred yards from the post Laughing Prince was a neck in front of Star Area and Mendip, but stopped badly in the last few strides, Star Area getting up .o win by a head from Mendip, with Laughing Prince three-quarters of a length away, and | Orazone fourth. Another to Fordell. The scratching of Lucky Bag and Speedaway left six to start in the Matarawa Hack. Cool Mint (£1543) was made favourite, while Freehold (£988) and Warflame also found solid support. Endorse began well and led down the back from Freehold and Marica. Crossing the top Endorse was well clear of Marica and then came Cool Mint and Freehold. The first to enter the straight was Endorse, with Cool Mint and Marica close up, followed by Potency and Freehold. Half-way down the straight, Cool Mint was in front with Marica next.
