NEW ROADING SCHEME.
FREEMAN'S BAT OUTLET.
LINK WITH FANSHAWE STREET.
Estimated to cost about £11,000 a scheme for linking up Harbour Street with Fanshawe Street, in the Freeman's Bay area, was recommended to the Auckland City Council. On the recommendation of the Mayor the scheme was referred back to the committee.
The total length of road to be made under the scheme, reported the city engineer (Mr. W. E. Bush), would be 1020 ft, and for the greater part of its length, nearly 550 ft, the road would have a grade of one in nine, the remaining 470 ft consisting of two vertical curves, the upper portion being the same grade as the existing portion of Harbour Street, which has a grade of one in 54. The formation involved 28,163 cubic yards of excavation, with an additional 730 cubic yards for the portion of Fanshawe Street to Poore Street, and provided for a roadway 40ft wide with suitable batters. Of' this excavation 11,000 cubic yards could, by arrangement with the Gas Company, be utilised to reclaim the area which the company holds to the north of the proposed road, and between it and the present timber trestle, leaving approximately 18,000 cubic yards to be carted to tip. At the present time he did not know whether this could be satisfactorily disposed of. The maximum cut involved was 45ft even for the comparatively steep grade of one in nine.
I The Town Planning Committee ( was authorised to enter into negotiations [with the Gas Company for the acquisition of property necessary for the new road.
