FIREMEN'S UNIFORMS. Hoses Pour Hailstones On Fire In Piccadilly. STRANGE SCENES WITNESSED. (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) (Received 9.00 a.m.) LONDON, February 13. Strange scenes Ave re "witnessed in Piccadilly from midnight to dawn when twenty fire engines and 130 firemen were fighting an outbreak at the Trocadero restaurant. Fhe firemen's uniforms were frozen stiff, huge icicles formed on the face of the building and 70ft water towers had to be used to combat the flames. The water froze as it left the hoses and fell on the fire in hailstones. The damage by the fire was confined to the upper storey of the restaurant, though there was nrnch destruction by water. There is no sign of a break in the Arctic-like weather. The intense cold has been accentuated by snowstorms and heavy easterly gales throughout Britain.
A message from Warsaw states that forest guards near Lublin found an entire band of gipsies comprising 34 men, women and children frozen to death.
The temperature in parts of Rumania is 45 degrees below zero, and entire families have been frozen to death in that country.
