Last year arrivals totalled 35.478 and the departures were 35,031, the excess of arrivals being: only 447 as compared with ll.SfiO in 102rt. Excepting the year 1027 last year had a larger number of departures than in any other period since the war. The number of State-assisted immigrants in 1028 is not yet known. These statistics do not include crews of ships. Commenting on the decrease of 310S in the number of arrivals, the Government Statistician remarks that the returns for the first six months showed a decline of 4515, but each month, except November, in the second half of the year, showed an increase over the correspondinp period of 1927. Residents of New Zealand who returned from abroad during the year numbered 15,407, as against Ifi.OST who went overseas—a temporary loss of 500, whereas the excess of departures last year was 2418. The number of tourists who arrived during the year was 9507, an increase of 492; other visitors numbered 4045, an increase of 72. As against the total of 13,642 tourists and other visitors there were 14,000 departures. For the present season so far, notes the Government statistician, the tourist traffic has been on an unprecedented scale. During the three months ended December 31 the number of tourists totalled 3650 as against 3044 for a similar period the previous year.
