BANK HOLIDAYS.
INCONVENIENCE TO TRADERS
BUSINESS MEN PROTEST. CONFERENCE TO BE SOUGHT. (By Telegraph.— Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. The view that there are too many bank holidays and that as a result inconvenience is caused to the commercial community, was expressed by a number of speakers at last night's meeting of the council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce. The discussion arose from a letter in which the Auckland Chamber of Commerce drew attention to the inconvenience caused to the commercial community on Monday, December 31, owing to the banks being closed on that dav, while business places were open. It was suggested that longer notice should be given of the intention of the banks to close on special days, or, alternatively, that the closing of banks should be regulated by statute. Mr. A. L. Maefarlane stated that manv firms had money which thev desired to place in the banks. When the banks were closed in the Old Country many banks had a man on duty after hours, So that money could be deposited. At one bank money could be deposited bv placing it in a slot, in much the same way as letters were posted. '"This matter is becoming one of great difficulty," said Mr. W. Machin. He added that he thought it was a reasonable request to ask the banks to synchronise their holidays with those of "the commercial community. It was decided to refer the matter to the Associated Chambers of Commerce, with a recommendation that a conference, be held with representatives of the banks with the object of reaching a satisfactory arrangement.
