TARANAKI MEETING.

THE OPENING DAY. YOMA WINS CUP. LADY QUEX TAKES SPRINT. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") NEW PLYMOUTH, this day. The weather for the opening day of the Taranaki Jockey Club's summer meeting was showery, but the attendance was pood and the tracfC v. p- in niee condition. The tote turnover of £21,851 is a £2200 increase on the first day of last year. The jockey P. Adams wa- throwr. heavily through Atareria striking a hurdle in the Waitara Hurdle Pace, and he has since been in hospital, whence it is reported he is suffering from severe injuries to bis head. A Favourite Wins. With the Auckland horseman S. Henderson in the saddle. Royal Acre was a warm favourite for the Waitara Hurdles. Ho was always in front and jumped well except for hitting a fence in front, of the stand. He was going very easily all through the last, round, and won pulling up by a length from Bonboinme, with Zeroon. who was not at his best, a poor third, and Polyphemus fourth. Royal Finance Unlucky. Royal Finance went out at a short price in the Ngamotu Juvenile Handicap and perhaps was a bit unlucky to lose. Calapat drew the rail«. and was in front to the straight from Tenacre, Airway and Royal Finance. From there Airway forged ahead, and won by a neck from Tenacre. Banket came through and finished third. Pocky Sharp and Royal Finance beiug next. The Splinters. Retting was oven in the Flying Handicap. Lady Quex began well from the outside, soon droW to the front, led into the straight and won easily by, two lengths from Whenuanui, with Llanore two lengths away third and Cimaliu fourth.

A Big Dividend. The. Moturoa Elcrtrir ll.mdirap produoed a groat dividend. Potency led into the straight, where "MorxcU took charge, and Taneriri canic fast. Merxeis was much too pood and won by half a length, casing up, whilp Taneriri heat. Joke Form by a length. Xext came Potency, while Austerity and Lady Lucerne were not far away. Hawera Form Repeated. Yoma repeated his Hawera form hy winning the Cup in great style. Hynanna was favourite at a short price. Bright Glow and Anolo made the running from Vertigprn and Yoma at a slow pace. Anolo went to the front along the hack. and Yoma and Hynanna moved up towards the front. Yoma was first to straighten up for home, and when challenged hy Hynanna proved too good and won well hy a couple of lengths. Hynanna beat Bright Glow by half a length for second place, and Yertigern was fourth. Kawhakina Well Beaten. Kawhakina was favourite for the Okato Hack Handicap, but he was well beaten. Whisogne made the early running, and was still in charge along the back, with Airtight and Gasnapper handy. Kawbakina moved up fast on the home bend, but the others moved up at the same time. The back division got carried out wide, and the finish was left to the leaders. "Whisogne got home by a head from Gasnapper with Spearmiss third only another head away, and Kawhakina fourth. A Fine Finish.

The field went away to an oven start in tlie Mimi Highweight Hnn<licnp. and ran in good line for over a furlong, when Hipo and Borsalene showed out. The pair gradually worked to the front and led to the straight from The Swell, who finished just well enough to win by a head from Hipo. Borsalene was half a head away third and Gold Cure fourth. It was a fine finish, and any one of the first three might have won. Gold Cure was a shade unluckv.

Concluding Event. Except that Endorse carried more than she was entitled to, only two horses were backed in the Timaru Hack Handicap, and they were Havering and Gold Dawn. E dorse went away with a great burst of speed, but came back to the field, and eventually Gold Dawn won easily by two lengths from Greenacre, with Havering a length away third and Endorse' fourth. The race showed Havering was not as good as reputed, oven allowing for a little luck on the turn. Results:— WAITARA HURDLES, of 200sovs. One mile and a-half and 100 yds. I—ROYAL ACRE (Mr. J.
