"EASY MONEY."
DEFRAUDING THE R.S.A.
OTHER CHARGES PENDING.
THIRD MAN ARRESTED.
Evidence of an extensive practice of obtaining money from the Auckland Rβturned Soldiers' Association by fraudulent means has been obtained by the police. Three arrests have been made this week and other charges are pending.
William Lawrenne Bowler, who appeared before Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., at the Police Court this morning, pleaded guilty to a charge of having obtained from Edward H. Sliarpe, secretary of the U.S.A., a sum of 17/0 by falsely representing that a receipt for £1 15/, purporting to be signed by A. J. Hill, was good and valid.
Cliicf Detective Hammond said Bowler ■was met in Auckland by a soldier who evidently "knew the run of the ropes," and a receipt was written out, stating that one and a-half days' work had been done, entitling accused to a payment of 17/0 from the association.
Bowler, it was stated, had been before the Court previously. Other charges of a similar nature were to be made, said the chief detective, and two men were at present awaiting sentence.
Mr. McKean: They seem to have diecovered an easy way of getting money. Sentence was deferred until January
