TAKAPUNA JOCKEY CLUB.

The appearance of the handicaps for the opening day of the Takapuna JocKey Club's meeting had drawn the fixture a stage nearer. It will be still further advanced on Friday, when acceptances close at 5 p.m. with the secretary, Mr F. D. McVay.

TAKAPUN* CUP. The abaence of any really first-class handicap horse saw mt. W..W. P. Russell allot the position of honour in the handicaps for the Takapuna Cup to Corinax. The son of Magpie proved himself a good stayer when he won the Auckland Cup on Boxing Day, but in that race he carried ouly 7.4, which is quite a different proposition to the 9.0 he is saddled with in the Takafhma Cup, although the field is not nearly so strong. The Takapuna Cup is run over a mile, three furlongs and 40 yards, and it is interesting to note that Corinax, in the Auckland Racing Club Handicap, one mile and a-half, was lieaten out of a place with 8.4. In that race Transformer was a good second when in receipt of 1111) from Corinax, and at Takapuna the difference is 41b. In The Shade, 8.7, was given a run at Ellerslie, and he may be buck to form next week, but again, he may not. His only run at Ellerslie would not make him out a winner at Takapuna. Prodice, 8.2, will be the favourite if she is lined up at the post. This filly did not win at the Auckland Cup meeting, but she raced consistently and well, ana it is hard to select one to beat her on Saturday week. Royal Doulton, 8.0, appears to have plenty of weight, and silthoujrh a useful mare, she will find it a hard task to' give Desert Glow 31b and Le Cholicas Sib. The distance will probably beat Flying Juliet but sbe is bound to be in the picture into the straight. Desert Glow, 7.11, did not get in the money at the recent Sllerslije meeting but he finished close up to the placed horses in the A.R.C. Handicap, and in that race he was not getting too good a run at one stage. A repetition of that form would make him vpvv hard to beat in the Takapnna Cup. The same stable, F. Loomb's, has also Prodiw, and holds a strong hand. Wenday, 7.9, has been racing most consistently and she must be given consideration, while of the others, Le Choucas, 7.6, The Lover, 7.0. and Eager Rose, 7.0, are possibilities. Just at present, F. Loomb looks 'to have the best prospects with his pair, Prodice ana Desert Glow. THE STEWARDS'.

The second "leg" of the double is the Stewards' Handicap, and that good horse Paganelli is on top with the steadier of ]0.7. It is not likely he will run. Looking through the list it is hard to go outside Lady's Boy 7.13, High Finance 7.13, Vallar 7.9, and Jolly Money 7.5. All are good beginners and with thenweights will run a smart three-quarteis of a mile. Vallar and Jolly Money appeal most just at present.
