SANDERS CUP TRIALS. FIRST RACE WON BY VAL. RON A IN SECOND PLACE. first trial race to select the lioai to represent Auckland in the Zanders' Cap contest commencing at Akaroa, on February 14 next, was held ♦i u Saturday in a steady westerly breeze and after a clo-e race of over an hour".- sailing. AVilletts and each carried a crew of three. The course wa? from off the King's wharf round the pile beacon off Chelsea and back, a distance of about frix mile.- which gave a dead beat up harbour and a flat run back.

Tho boats were sent off at 3.8 p.m., Yal loading across the line closely followed by Rona and Avalon. the latter lia\ing the windward position..

The three boats headed for Northcote on port. Kona falling on" to leeward. Val f-tiil led with Avalon doing better, but Yal had the weather position when the two crossed tack.-. Kona now improved her position and crossed ahead of Avalon. The three boats now stood for the western tide deflector and were all close together. Avalon was iirst to go round ■to port and crossed Rona, but Val still led, all being within 100 yards of each other. Rona now stood over towards Birkenhead, but Val and Avalon worked short boards up the Ponsonby shore. Off the Watchman the two leaders, Val and Avalon were within os of each other Val keeping on Avalon's weather. ]!ona did well by working the northern *-hore, getting the full benefit of the flood tide and when the three converged towards the mark, Kona had the lead Lv ilOvds. ■-•

Spinnakers were smartly set by all three crews for the run down harbour to the finishing line off the King's wharf. Jlona had to luff a bit to clear Val and .Avalon as they lay close hauled for the mark and lost some seconds here. On the run down Val passed Rona off the boat harbour, and Avalon also passed Jlona off the Western tide deflector, but all were very close. Rona got Avalon's wind and ran past her off the Prince's wharf. Val was sailing well and running straight for home with Rona and Avalon jockeying for second place. The Devonport Yacht Club held a series of cruising and harbour races on Saturday affprnoon. All events started off the Victoria wharf, the bis keelers and the 20 and 22footers raced to Rocky Bay, Waiheke, the former going round Rangitoto and Motutapu. and thence through Crusoe passage on the western end of Waiheke to their destination, the centreboard boats going direct to the bay.

Classes M, V, S. T. X, Y and Star competed over the usual harbour course, and some close racing resulted.

There was a steady topsail breeze from the west, which held all afternoon. This srave the boats going to Rocky Bay a fair wind all the way. The boats in the harbour races bad a run with spinnakers from the starting line to Sandspit. a close haul on starboard over to Resolution, another close haul on port from Resolution to a murk off Stanley Bay wharf and a flat run to the finishing line. Promptly at 2.2.1 p.m. the fire starting flags .went up from the eastern end of Victoria wharf and the six bis: keelers. all carrying topsails, lay off and on waiting for the fall of the last flag. At gunfire Kotirl got smartly away first, followed t>y lorangi, Moana, rrize, Waione and Windward in this order. lorangi improved her lead, and was three minutes ahead of Moana passing the Rangitoto Beacon. Waione had the misfortune to ground on the sandbank between Victoria wharf and Sandspit. and retired. The finish was timed: lorangi (ljm), Bta 22m 40s: Monna (10), rih 34m 30s: Pnze (9m). 5h 3tfm 30s: Kotiri (15m), ah 4_m JOs; Windward (18m), 5h 44m 10s. Result: lorangi, 1; Moana, 2; Windward. 3.

The finish was : Ola. 3h r.Bm *Se; June, 4h 6m 10s; Moa, 4h 10m 445. da won by over seven minutes. The M class were next away, the six Boats making their usual close stnrr. Alarntea leading.
