Timber Workers' Ruse To Hold Mass Meeting.
STRENUOUS OPPOSITION
SYDNEY, January 6. The members of the Australian Timber Workers' Union at Sydney in accordanee with their decision to do no Saturday work, in defiance of the new award, absented themselves yesterday mornin* They attended a mass meeting at the Trades Hall, which was camouflaged aa a social gathering.
This was in order to defeat the new clause in the Commonwealth Arbitration Act, whach imposes a fine of £1000 for holding anything in the nature of » strike meeting.
The proceedings were opened with a chorus of "Advance Australia." followed by "Solidarity for Ever." The outcome of the meeting was not disclosed, but it is understood that a message was rea4 from the Victorian branch, expressing the intention strenuously to oppose Mr. Justice Lukin's award. *
Some of the master timber merchant* in Sydney intend to continue worki:* under the former award until all section* of the industry decide what attitude Is to be adopted toward the men. A few of the employers expressed their intention of docking four hours' pay from the wages of the men who absented themselves yesterdav.
