FOR THE UNEMPLOYED.

SUBSIDY FOR WAKGAITUL

DISAPPOINTMENT OF MAYOR.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)

WANGANUI, this day.

The Hon. W. A. Veitch, Minister of Labour, has been advised that a 50 per cent subsidy up to £860 had been granted for various stated works. Rewarding

the proposed City Council relief works, estimated to cost £3200, a subsidy of 50 per cent, on labour at 14/ a day, would be paid.

The Mayor (M*\ W. J. Rogers) said it was regrettable that the Government could not make a straight out grant, as the council had no money to spend. To obtain a subsidy it would be necessary for loans to be raised, but this was out of the question at the present juncture.

CHRISTCHURCH REQUESTS. CONSIDERATION BY CABINET. (By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Mr. H. T. Armstrong, M.P., who went to Wellington to interview the Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward, regarding further Government assistance for the Christchureh unemployed, has communicated with the Deputy-Mayor (Mr. D. G. Sullivan, M.P.).

Mr. Armstrong's message is as follows:—

"I have interviewed the Prime Minister, but he holds out no hope until the Government gets its scheme of railway construction going, which will be some time yet. I have asked for help in the meantime, but he says this will have to be considered by Cabinet next week."

A total of 300 unemployed were registered at the Labour Bureau at noon on Saturday, and there are many more unemployed in the city who have not registered.
