WELLINGTON', this day. Mr. R. J. Barnes, whose name is a household \rord in Australasian che-s circles by reason of his manv triumph* during the past 40 rears," died this morning in his 69th year. He made his initial bid for the New Zealand championship at the first Dunedin congress in 1889-90, when he tied with the late Henry Hootchen. of Christehurch, and lost in the play-off. He won the championship a year later at Wellington and altogether had attended about 20 congresses, winning the Dominion title five times and being runner-up nine times for a long succession of yean*. Mr. Barnes was champion of the Wellington Working Ilea's Club. He had a fine record in telegraphic and elher matches. Mr. Barnes was an accountant aed ":■-: keenly interested in bowla,
