PLENTIFUL AS SPRATS.
BIG GAME FISHING IN NORTH.

RUSSELL, this day. Big game fish are nearly as plentiful as sprats. Three launches had exciting sport with nine monsters on Sunday. Seven mako sharks and two swordfisli were captured in one day and landed on the Russell wharf in the evening. The fighting mako and the leaping, lightning, rushing swordfish continue to arrive in no uncertain numbers. The following were caught off Cape Brett in what is known as "the rip":—Mr. A. B. Jourdan, of Te Kuiti, first swordfish of the season, weighing 2451b, makos, 1651b and 3001b, launch Lorna Doone; Mr. H. N. Cook, mako shark, 3251b, launch Lorna Doone; Mr. Geo. Warne, Russell, mako, 2581b, launch Marlin; Mr. Leon Warne, Russell, mako, 3101b, swordfish, 2801b; Mr. W. P. Hodgson, Russell, mako, 2521b, launch Reliance; Mr. A. H. Phillipson, Auckland, mako, 2781b, launch Reliant*.
Mr. G. H. Fowler, of London, hooked the first awordfish on Saturday, but he was unfortunate in that it got away. Lord Grinthorpe, on his return to England, writes about the Bay of Islands as follows: —"When I left* England I had not the remotest idea that I was coming to such a delightful place.
