Christmas Cheer Where

Poverty Stalks. GENEROSITY AT HOME. (" Times " Cables.) LONDON, December 25. South Wales is having a brighter Christmas than it had dared to hope for. Thousands of miners and their families will remember with gratitude the 1928 Yuletide as a result of the work undertaken by many agencies to alleviate their miseries. From the Lord Mayor's fund £45,000 has been sent to South Wales to be expended chiefly on footwear and warm garments for mothers and children. Arrangements are also being made for loans to meet the cost of maternity cases. A Cardiff stockbroker gave £500 to provide Christmas dinners for children, and flour and vegetables have been widely distributed among the miners' households. The Miners' Federation alone has handled 26,100 parcels, containing gifts from all parts of Britain, in the last three weeks. The Young Men's Christian Association is giving special attention to the clothing of young miners, and is seeming employment for them in England and overseas. YEAR'S HAPPY CLOSE. SYDNEY'S RECORD BUSINESS. SYDNEY, December 25. The weather was gloriously fine for the holiday, with a forecast fpr a continuance of good weather, with moderate temperatures. There has been a great exodus of city people for mountain or seaside resorts. Shopkeepers report a record amount of business, which is a happy ending for a year in which business men had mar.y anxieties owing to the dullness of trade.
