WATER SUPPLY.
PAPATOETOE'S DECISION.
POLL CARRIED BY BIG MAJORITY.
By a majority of six to one the ratepayers of Papatoetoe approved of a proposal submitted by the Town Board yesterday for a loan of £26,000 to establish a district water supply. The voting was 388 for the proposal and 66 against, out of a roll of 1100.
Satisfaction at the result of the poll was expressed to-day by the chairman of the Town Board, Mr. T. R. Smytheman, who said that the scheme was one which would provide the district with an ample water supply for years to come. The work would be put in hand without delay, in order to have as many consumers as possible connected by next summer. Thorough tests had been carried out at a source at the foot of McLaughlin's Mount, two and a-half miles from the town, and the water was of the highest quality. A flow of 1,000,000 gallons a week was available, and the pressure on the mains would be 65 pounds to the square inch, which would ensure effective fire protection. Although a large number of eemi-artesian wells existed at Papatoetoe, Mr. Smytheman considered the supply would be demanded by a large number of residents, and should gradually become §elf-supporting.
