WAITAKI POWER BOARD.
TENDERS FOR CONSTRUCTION.
FIRST TWO OF FIVE UNITS.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
WELLINGTON, this day,
Tenders have just closed with the Public Works Department for the construction of the first section of the Waitaki hydro-electric power scheme. They cover the manufacture, supply, and delivery of generating sets. The specifications call for two 16,666 k.v.a. generators, direct coupled exciters, and direct coupled water turbines of 23,000 b.h-p. units, to be complete with all accessories. Preference is to be given tenders for combined units.
These two units, with a total nominal generating capacity of 33,332 k.v.a.. will constitute the first installation of generating equipment to be installed at the Waitaki powerhouse, the ultimate development being five units. Each 1 generator will supply power through a bank of step-up transformers to the 110,000 volt "bus" system, from which the power will be fed to the main South Island 110,000-volt transmission system. The main headwork of the Waitaki scheme consists of a dam having a spillway crest about 1250 ft long, at an elevation of 757 ft. The normal river bed at the site is 687 ft, and the maximum range of water level above the dam will be from 754 ft to 709 ft.
