A message from Seattle, Washington says a British cargo steamer* the naino cf which is given as the Chief Maquilla, en route from British Columbia to Shanghai, is in distress in mid-Pacifl«. Seven rescue ships are rushing to bar aid and just before darkness set in threo ships had reached the Chief Maquilla. The vessel has a crew of eight British officers and 33 Chinese seamen. There is 13ft of water in the engine-room and the vessel has a list of 15 degrees.
She has a deck load of timber. Son* of her lifeboats were washed away. The steamer Chief Maquilla is owned by the Dollar Steamship Lines, Limited, of Hongkong. She is helplessly adrift in the Pacific 2000 miles west of Vancouver Island.
The rescue ships will tow her to Dutch Maquilla. They will tow her to Dutch Harbour, Alaska. The vessel's pump* are useless.
