"1% Tjras mcrre contemptible than if he. had stolen from; the Chinaman himself," said Sub-Inspector McCarthy, at the Police Coart this morning, when Ernest Richard McDowell (51), a dealer, admitted the theft of & bag containing horse feed, worth 3/ a the property of Itog On. ' Mr. McCarthy said that Pong On left hia horse and tart outside the City Markets yesterday while* he was buying |Ma vegetables. The horse was feeding from the nose bag. McDowell was seen 1 to remove the bag and take it over to i his own horse. Accused had many previous convictions, and the only thing that could be said in mitigation Was that his wife had recently left a hospital and that he was endeavouring to keep her.
"He has not been up for theft for five years, so I won't send him to gaol this time," said Mr. P. K. Hunt, S.M., in fining McDowell £2, in default 14 days' imprisonment.
