OBITUARY.

MR. J. MOTR BARR. _ A gentleman enjoying a very wida circle of friends in the' person of Mr. James Muir Barr, of 73, Carlton GoW> Road, died suddenly this morning. Th* late Mr. Barr, who* was best known an a former manager of the Auckland Savings Bank, was in his seventieth year. Born in Kilmarnock. Scotland, tM late Mr. Barr came to Now Zealand with his parents as a bov, and lived in Auckland all his life. After leaving school he joined the staff of the Auckland Savings Bank at the age of 17, thereby commencing n term of long and faithful service. In 1882 he was appointed chief clerk, the manager at that time being the late Mr. R. Campbell and the accountant the late Mr. S. G. Rowntree. Front that date until 1912 —a period of thirty years—no change took place, but an Mr. Campbell's retirement, Mr. Rown* tree was appointed manager, and M% Barr promoted to accountant. In 19!j Mr. Barr reached the top rung of t» ladder, being appointed manager of thi bank in succession to Mr. Rowntree. who had retired. Mr. Barr remained at the head of the institution untf 1924, when he retired on account of ill-health. Altogether the lat£ Mr. Barr was forty-seven yea« 9l the service of the Savings Bank, and, as was only natural, he made countless friends in all parts of Auckland. The late Mr. Barr was also connected with the Auckland Co-operative Building Society. He was a director of th» society for a number of vears, and w* chairman at the time of'his retirement from the business life of the city. rt m business connections, Mr. Barr was widelv known in emirefc circles. A member of tho Presbyterian Church, he was an active worker in ita interests at Onehunga, Devonport (wheiil Mr. Barr lived for twenty-five years), Belmont and Northcote, being particfr larly well known in Sunday school work.
