THAMES NEWS.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) THAMES, Saturday. Extensive preparations are being made for the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of St. James' Church, which will be held on Sunday, December 9. The first Presbyterian Church was built at Thames in 1868, the Rev. James Hill being the first minister. This building is now used as the Sunday school. The present church was erected in 1898, and is a very fine building standing in picturesque surroundings in Pollen Street. The exceptionally low tides experienced lately have made navigation on the Plako River very difficult. Above Xgatea this is particularly apparent, and though to a certain extent due to dry weather, the amount of dredging and river improvement being carried out has some bearing on this condition of affairs. One of the Land Drainage Department's Priestman dredges has been engaged for many months in Improving the channel between Ngatea and Rawe Rawe, while the Bacyrus dragline dredge has laid back the river bank as far as Ngatea. An effect of the lownesa of the tides has been that the berthage for the Ngarua ferry has had to be deepened.
