FATAL ROCK FALL

WORKMAN KILLED AT HUIA. ARDUOUS TRIP FOR AMBULANCE. OARS BOGGED ON OLAY ROAD*. A quarry near the Huia dam was the scene of a distressing fatality yesterday afternoon, a City Council workman, John Urquhart, aged 45, being killed by a fall of rock. Mr. Urquhart was working on the rock face when, a moderate-sized piece , of stone above him became dislodged, and fell on his head. The skull was fractured, and death was instantaneous. The quarry is a mile and a half distant from the main road, and the body was carried along the cordwroy track through the bush, the working gang taking fourminute spells in carrying the stretcher. The St. John Ambulance was summoned from Auckland, and one of the motor ambulances, carrying a doctor made the journey to the dam. It was' a difficult drive, owing to the heavy state of the clay roads, and the ambulance encountered several cars which were bogged. Difficulties were overcome, however, and the journey to and from Huia was accomplished in four hours. The body was brought to the mortuary to await an inquest. Mr. Urquhart, who was a returned soldier, leaves a widow and two children.
