MONDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 1928. ILLNESS OF THE KING.
For the cause that lacks assistance, For the wrong that needs resistance, For the future in the distance, And the good that we can do.
Remeinbeiung the unexpected termination to the illness of his father, which, starting from something apparently slight, rapidly developed into bronchitis, people have naturally from the very beginning of the illness been anxious about the attack of congestion of the lungs from which the King is suffering. His Majesty has undergone much physical and mental strain in meeting the constant calls on his time and strength in fulfilling iis numerous public engagements. He is the one person who is expected to meet every engagement punctually, and the formality attending all public functions at which ho is present is in itself very fatiguing. The King is loved by his people. This is due to his personality and to the unfailing sense of duty which he has always displayed. Unassuming by nature, he has never been forgetful of the dignity and responsibilities of his position, and he has maintained this dignity by a quiet force of character that has never failed to impress all who have been brought in contact with him. Ho has shown sympathy with all classes of his subjects, and he has done much by his personal influence to promote the welfare of his realm. When it was known that he was seriously ill, the universal anxiety showed how strong a hold he had on the affections of his subjects. His illness has caused people to realise how great a strain is thrown on members of the Royal Family by the constant demands made by the public on their time and strength. There is now a strong desire that this strain should be lightened, and that the King should consider his own health more and curtail some of those public duties which in the past he has been only too ready to assume to the neglect of his own welfare.
