WHAKATAKE.

At the monthly meeting of the Harbour Board it was decided to dispense with the services of the harbour master as from March 1 next, the harbour master being allowed the use of the house at the Heads for services as caretaker of the board's property there. The matter of launch charges was left to the Finance Committee to go Into with a view to reduction in same. The question of the enforcement of Bylaw 169, relating to heavy traffic fees due by carriers using the wharf approaches, was discussed. The chairman (Mr. W. R. Boon) and Mr. Stewart were appointed a sub-committee to confer with carriers with a view to collection of fees in- order that improvements to wharf approaches might be effected. At a special meeting of the Whakatane School Committee Mr. Rand was elected honorary treasurer in succession to Mr. Tucker. The matter of the High School building was discussed and it was decided to forward a number of suggestions to the board's architect in respect to the design of the building, the furnishing and conveniences, the opinion being also expressed that in any future extension of the school provision shouldb e made to have two or three rooms divided by folding doors so that the rooms could be used as an assembly hall. In the plans now being prepared provision is being made for two class rooms and a science room. It is expected that the work will be put in hand early in the new year. The annual sale of work under the auspices of the Anglican Ladies' Guild was held in the Parish Hall yesterday. The weather was fine and there was a large attendance of people from the county and borough. Business was brisk throughout the day and the sum of £110 was taken. The vicar, the Rev. C. Brown, congratulated the ladies on the fine display in the hall and called on the Mayor, Mr. W. Sullivan, to open the fair. This he did in a neat and complimentary speech. In the evening a flannel dance was held, the music being contributed by Mr. Clark's Orchestra. At the Whakatane County Council meeting the estimates for the current year, ending March 31 next, were adopted. The estimates showed that all ridings will be free of debt next March, except Rangitaiki £188, Omataroa £1388, and Nukuhau £238, making a total debt of £1814. At the annual general meeting of the Whakatane Retailers' Association the resignation of Mr. H. B. Tucker (the retiring president) as a member of the association was received with regret. The election of officers resulted :—President, F. Waugh; vice-president, Mr. J. Bock; committee. Messrs. Kamson and Beamish; the late secretary, Mr. E. L. Green, having tendered his resignation, the matter of appointing a secretary was left in the hands of the executive committee. At the meeting of the borough council the clerk stated that the highways board grant to the council amounted to £228. The county council notified that they intended to proceed with the legalisation of Wainui Koad at a cost of £26, and requested the borough to contribute £11/ towards the cost in consideration of portion of the road being within the borough. A communication was received from the Main Highways Board stating that members intended to make a tour of the Bay of Plenty anil would be in Whakatane on the 20th inst.. arriving at 12.30 p.m. and leaving for Opotiki at 2.30 p.m. They would be pleased to receive deputations while in Whakatane. The Mayor and Crs. Culler and Howat were appointed to wait on the highways board while in Whakatane.
