BOWLING.

PENNANT MATCHES BEGUN. SUCCESS OF HELENSVILLE. LEADING WITH 100 PER CENT. (By TRUNDLER.) ■ t The bccoihl pennant round of the seagon was played on Saturday, the first having l>een postponed till next March. The following table gives the number of rinks played by each of the 32 • clubs competing, with their wins and losses, arranged in order of their percentage of ■wins, and for comparison, the outside column allows how each club fared in the five rounds last year. STrmnv a

The most striking feature 13 the high position occupied by Helensville, their two wins against the strongest rinks that Edendale could put in, skipped by the champion and ex-champion of the club, fully Ratifying the high opinion always held regarding this strong country club. All will remember the compliment Carlton paid them in the first round, when they planned to meet them ■with the two skips who had first fought out the final of the Labour Day tournament. Doubtless Auckland will do something of the same next week, and on dit that one rink went up to Helensville yesterday, to have a good look at the green, ready for next week's conflict. None would be surprised to see Rocky Nook leading in their section, for they always do uncommonly well in the pennants. Tournaments This Week. The little club at Buckland, a few miles beyond Pukekohe, will hold a rink tournament to-morrow. Eight or nine rinks are going from the city, including five from Onehunga, and one from the centre executive. Three other tournaments make this a busy week in bowling. On Wednesday there is the open rink tournament at Ponsonby, on Thursday the delegates welcome the tourists back from their voyage round the world, at the Auckland green, and on Friday the Public Service annual pairs tournament takes place. This latter started in 1917, with eight entries, but this year there are 48, requiring to be divided between Epsom and Remuera. Australians Visiting New Zealand. Mr. J. C. Blair, Armidale Club, Melbourne, arrived last week by the Aorangi, and is staying till about the middle of next week, when he leaves for Wellington. He expects six rinks to come from Victoria for the Dominion carnival in January, and he has been commissioned to arrange for their reception and accommodation in Wellington. As a member of the Victoria Bowling Association executive, he will doubtless be consulted by the Dominion Council as. to the return visit of New Zealand bowlers to Australia next season, following up the proposal that each country should visit the other in alternate years. He himself is playing third in a very strong rink, the skip being Walter Bleach, one of the best players in Victoria, and this rink will probably be one of those chosen to play in the Test against New Zealand. If the skip is any better than his third, they should have a good run in the rink championship, for Mr. Blair is a very resourceful player, with an exceptionally clean delivery. Backhand and forehand, his bowl gets away on an absolutely even keel, with never the slightest sign of a wobble, so he obtains all the draw that is to be got out of a set of woods which have more than the orthodox Australian bias. A noticeable peculiarity in his delivery is his backward swing, for ho twists his wrist in much the same style as A. R. Coltman, late of Carlton, now of Hamilton. Although most of the Victorian bowlers competing in our carnival are going direct from Sydney to Wellington, and will probably return home as sof»n as the competitions are over, it is tinderstood that some of the New South Walea party are proposing to make a more leisurely tour. It is expected that a few will arrive in Auckland by the Niagara on December 17, so they may be persuaded to play in the Christmas tournament here before going on to Rotorua and Wellington. Mr. A. Hutton, president of the Glen Innes Club, Beaufort, N.S.W., has been spending a few weeks in Auckland, and will return to Sydney by the Ulimaroa on Friday. He has accepted a few invitations to have a game here, and has had his full share of wins. A Canadian bowler, Mr. Trousdale, of Vancouver, has been spending a few weeks -with relatives in the Eaipara, and will probably sfcay a week or two in the city before leaving for home. He will be welcome to any green he cares to visit. Rocky Nook Smoko. The pavilion at Rocky Nook was the scene- of pleasant celebrations on Saturday evening, when members gave a smoke concert in honour of the prize winners during last season. The president of the club, Mr. L. C. Kent, gave a warm welcome to the members of the centre executive who attended, Messrs. R. Coldicutt (president},, J. Pascoe, A. B. Barter and G. M. Reid. Mr. Coldicutt presented the Lambert Cup, which now goes to the winners of the Easter Fours, together with a banner inscribed with their names—G. Hunt, A. Farley, J. L. Wakerley, W. H. Keatley. Mr. Pascoe added his congratulations, and Mr. R. JEagletoa eutertamed jfche coarjjagjr gjth

a chatty account of his recent tour of the world. Other prize winners were:— Singles championship, W. H. Keatley; runner-up, A. H. Roylance; president's fours, J. Kayes, Oughton, Baxter, Stone; pairs, Taylor and Beehre; first year championship, J. Lewis; president's singles, A. Campbell; runner-up, Phil. Smith; handicap singles, T. Jones. Songs were given by Messrs. Leather and Stone, and several items by the Rocky Nook Quartet, Messrs. Rutledge, Leather, J. Kayes and B. A. Kayes. i ,

DELEGATES' MATCH. An afternoon tourney, arranged as a welcome home to the Auckland bowlers who toured Great Britain and other countries recently, is to be held on the Auckland Green on Thursday afternoon. Invitations have been sent to all centre delegates, and the interest taken in the affair may be judged by the fact that oyer fifty delegates have already signified their intention to be present. Of the tourists, fully a dozen are likely to attend.
