TE KUITI ANNUAL TRANSFORMER LIFTS CUP. OPEX SPRINT TO LIAISON". MERVETTE THE SKVEN FURLONGS. Backers generally did not experience a vpry happy timu on Saturday afternoon at flio To Kiiiti Club's opening day, only two favourites being successful. Transformer's win in the Clip was a mild surprise, and a warm favourite in Tea Timewent under in the open sprint. The totalisator showed a decrease of more than £500 compared with the- opening day two seasons a£o, the last occasion the meeting was held on the club's local course. Archangel dropped out of the Tβ Kumi Handicap, for which the public elected Hakanoa favourite with £427 invested on his chance, next in the order of betting being Ripon Abbey ( £338) and Glenatar (£273). Whaka King was first out, with Glenatar, Ripon Abbey, Nurjahan, Brampton and Hakanoa next. Turning out of the straight Ramblin' Kid ran wide and carried Hakanoa to the outside of the course. Glenstar hit the front along the back stretch, with Ripon Abbey, Whaka King and Nurjahan following, and crossing the top Ripon Abbey and Glenstar were racing on terms just ahead of Nurjahan, Whaka King and Brampton. Ripon Abbey led into the straight, where Glenstar challenged and in a hard finish got the verdict by a neck from Brampton, who beat Ripon Abbey by three lengths. Nurjahan was fourth, followed by Whaka King, Hakanoa, Arch Queen, Master Roley and Ramblin , Kid. Small Field Contests Sprint. Waltzer and Quillfire did not go to the post for the Stewards' Handicap, the open sprint event which comprised five starters only. Tea Time was in most demand, being backed to the extent of £505. Next in order came Town Bird (£357) and Macroom (£294). Tea Time was the early leader with New Moon, Liaison, Macroom and Town Bird following, but at the end of two furlongs Town Bird was racing level with Tea Time, New Moon and Liaison being together next and Macroom last. Crossing the top, Town Bird had taken charge, closely, followed by Liaison, Tea Time, New Moon and Macroom and they came into the straight in that order where Liaison outpaced her opponents and won ty a length from New Moon, who came fast and cut Tea Time out of ■econd place. Macroom was fourth and Town Bird last. Favourite Wins Puketutu. King Smoclc was the only withdrawal from the Puketutu Handicap. Mervette (£738)), The Lamb (£424), and The Thorn (£202) were backed in that order, and the public summed the, race up correctly. Prince Lu was firet to break the line, and along the back was attended by The Lamb, Tinoiti, The Thorn and Mervette. Crossing the top Prince Lu was still in charge, and had The Lamb, Tinoiti, Waltzer, ivfervette and The Thorn as his nearest attendants, with Bright Day and Te Koroke laet. Mervette moved up third turning for home, and coming away in the run to the judge, eho got the decision by two lengths from The Lamb, who was one and a-half lengths ahead of The Thorn. Waltzer wae fourth, followed by Bright Day, Prince Lu, Te Koroke and Tinoiti. Bulolo at Last. There were ten scratching* in the Otorohanga Handicap, leaving nine horses to go to the poet. It wae a fairly good betting race, with Bombarder (£580) in moat demand, while Bulolo (£536) and Whaka King (£221) also received good backing. When the barrier lifted Flitter was quickest to begin, with Bulolo, Oeear, Whaka King and Bombarder in attendance. Bulolo had taken charge as they crossed the top wiifch Oacar next, Flitter, Bombarder and The Jack Jumper following. Oacar was Ant to turn for home with Bulolo and Bombarder bandy, and when they straightened up lor tho final struggle, Bulolo finished beet, and was half a length to th« good when the poet was reached, with Oscar three-quarters of a length ahead of Bombarder.
