Earl And Countess Of Liverpool

The former Governor-General of New Zealand, the Earl of Liverpool, accompanied by the Countess, will sail for New Zealand to-morrow by the Eemuera.
The Earl of Liverpool, the Governor of New Zealand from 1912 to 1917, and Governor-General from 1917 to 1920, was born in May, 1870. He was educated at Eton and at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Graduating from there he became, in 1891, a 2nd lieutenant in the Rifle Brigade. Two years later he was promoted lieutenant, while four years after he was made a captain. He was Aide-de-Camp to Earl Cadogan, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland from 1898 to 1900. He served in the Boer War in South Africa from 1901 to 1902, and in 1907 he gained the rank of a major. During that time he was State Steward and Chamberlain to the Early of Aberdeen, K.T., the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. He is a wealthy man, and owns large estates in Lincolnshire.
The term of office of the Earl and Countess of Liverpool as the Vice-Regal representatives in New Zealand, will always be notable, for the fact that it embraced the war period. During those years their Excellencies took a very prominent part in all work, and were most indefatigable and generous in their labours and with monetary assistance in all causes on behalf of 'he New Zealand Forces.
