Vinegar has been known from the earliest times, and was formerly much used for medicinal purposes. The vapour, simple or aromatised, is a powerful restorative in cases of fainting, and as a means of relieving headache.

Vinegar is also invaluable for the toilet in the summer; • nothing is so refreshing' for sponging the face and temples to allay heat. Two tablespoon-fuls-poured into a bath of warm water is most refreshing for a tired person, especially after walking on a hot day.
