MINER FATALLY INJURED.
PRESIDENT OF UNION,
BURIED UNDER COAL.

Mr. Harry Chilton, president of the Miners' Union, who was injured bv a fall of coal in the Blackball .Mine at 8 a.m. to-day, died of his injuries. With three mates, Chilton was working at the face. A popper drill was being worked by him and T. Leitch, and the noise of the machine prevented their hearing the strata move on the roof. About three tons of coal fell, pinnin" Chilton against the drill and throwing his companion down just clear. An° other miner, A. McC'lure, was slightly injured. A fourth man, McDonald" extricated Leitch, but two hours were taken in getting Chilton out. He died five hours later.
Mr. Chilton took a leading part in Blackball activities. He was 5'5 years of age and a native of Staffordshire, England. He had been 21 years in New Zealand, and leaves a wife and two married daughters.
